What Pipeline presents Age 81, a show of new paintings by Quintessa Matranga on and around the subject of gifts. The mirror-like skin of these wrapped gifts reflect a voided world. Their surfaces share a material likeness with the celestial as much as with the everyday Christmas or birthday present.
Their neatly folded edges point back to their stretched canvas terrain and pre-built box frame. These square-shaped works build upon Matranga’s previous series of coffin-shaped paintings, further fusing image with object.
Visibly expanding through moments as if on an event horizon, these gifts accelerate from the canvas corners bounding into the third dimension. Vanishing points are made visible here, melding present with past, typically sequential frames of time stretched into one long time lapse.
