Hamza Halloubi’s exhibition The Zero Degree of Performance is built around his film installation Walking and Talking, shot in a European museum of modern and contemporary art. The work is a reflection on the museum and its status in relation to its historical and social context, and on the question of identity. In his film Walking and Talking, the artist treats the image brutally, deconstructing the structure and the narrative framing. The English transcription of the voice-over is placed in the center of the screen, guiding the viewer to decrypt images with no horizon. This focus defines the field of images in a circle which accentuates the absence of gravity. The image is thus reduced to its elementary form, neither completely documentary nor purely fictional. This situation of voluntary distancing and decorrelation is the point of research and action from which the artist acts. Through this Moroccan-European in-between artist Hamza Halloubi chooses not to belong exclusively, and claims freedom from a different perspective.
