KAYOKOYUKI is pleased to present Three Worlds by Michi Suwa. This is Michi Suwa’s first exhibition in KAYOKOYUKI.
Although all the rivers flow into the ocean, the water in the sea never overflows. We are aware that the globe rotates, but we still feel the sun and stars are moving slowly when we look up at the sky. Are the world we know (or think to know) and the world we perceive really the same?
The title of the exhibition, Three Worlds is inspired by Escher’s work of the same title. In this work, in addition to the two worlds of inside and outside of the water, a third world created by the boundary of the water surface is expressed. There seems to be a slight distortion of how the real world is constructed and seen. Suwa says, her work begins from the perspective of looking down at her own feet. Various objects at her feet, and the ground beyond, or a kite when looking up from the ground to the sky. By gazing at those objects carefully, Suwa deconstructs them and carefully scoops up the slow but certain flowing time they have. Then Suwa reconstructs a world that is perceptible through her own body without lies into the space of her paintings.
When we confront with the works of Michi Suwa, we feel a kind of new sense of oddness towards the world which we usually take for granted. Suwa tries to understand the real world through her sincere observation, contemplation of, and painting the things and phenomena around her. The abstracted landscape of phenomena and time that Suwa depicts stimulates the viewer’s primitive but fundamental inquisitiveness.
